They just tell you what you need to know to score higher on the GRE. There's a big difference. In Cracking the GRE, The Princeton Review will teach you how to think like the test makers.
This is accomplished by teaching you how to:
Eliminate answer choices that look right but are planted to fool you This book gives you 135 practice test questions covering each section of the exam, plus a CD-ROM with four full-length simulated GREs and instant score reporting. The questions in these tests are exactly like the ones you'll see on the actual computer-adaptive GRE, and every solution is fully explained.
The GRE CAT for Dummiesby Suzee Vlk4th Edition, Paperback List: $16.99 -- Amazon.com Price: $15.29 -- You Save: $1.70(10%) Published by IDG Books Worldwide, June 2000 Review It goes without saying that if you're taking the GRE you're not really a dummy. But GRE scores are an important part of any graduate-school application--so you need to do your best. Suzee Vlk, long time test-prep specialist and author of several Dummies books, can help. The GRE for Dummies is packed with useful information and strategies to help you prepare for the test. The book includes advice on how to use the book efficiently (Vlk estimates you'll need 31 hours to work through it), review chapters for all three sections of the exam, and two complete practice exams. Vlk also discusses the pros and cons of taking the GRE by computer or with paper and pencil and special advice for those who choose to take the computer-based test. In familiar Dummies style, Vlk includes a handy tear-out "Cheat Sheet" with a summary of the most important information and a "Part of Tens" section with 10 "wrong rumors" about the GRE and 10 relaxation techniques to use before and during the exam. With its witty writing, helpful icons in the margins pointing out important information, and useful vocabulary scattered throughout, The GRE for Dummies makes test preparation easy and relatively painless.
How to Prepare for the TOEFL with CD-ROMby Pamela J. SharpePaperback with Audio Disk List: $34.95 -- Amazon.com Price: $27.96 -- You Save: $6.99(20%) Published by Barrons Educational Series, September 1999 I am a professional TOEFL prep instructor. Here is my review: If you can only buy one book, this is the one. However, I would*not* recommend that you buy only this book--it is not enough. You need to buy at least two other titles as well--the official "TOEFL Kit" and the "PowerPrep TOEFL" software. First, this book does NOT have a computer test. Instead, it has some questions in the book that simulate the computer questions. Half of the tests are written for people who have to take the paper test, the other half are for people who have to take the computer test. If you can only buy one book, you need a review of grammar and other sections of the test, and you want some practice tests, this book is your best choice. It has a lot of grammar explanations and lots of practice questions. So, it is a great value--the price is low, and you get a lot of questions. However, the book is not perfect. Some of the questions are old, and you will not see those types on the TOEFL anymore. Furthermore, many of the questions are easier than the real TOEFL, especially the reading sections. Many of my students have said that the reading section is very, very hard and that they were not prepared for the real TOEFL when they took it. In short, if you can only buy one book, this one is okay, but you really should buy official TOEFL materials so that you will be ready for the real test when you take it. |
